Abstract

Urinary incontinence (UI) is a condition characterized by involuntary loss of urine, a recurrent problem in the puerperium and, consequently, has a negative impact on the woman’s quality of life. This research aimed to review in the literature which physiotherapeutic approaches are being used to treat SUI in the postpartum period. For this, a systematic literature review was carried out, using the databases Pubmed, MedLine, BVS, SciELO and PEDro, using the descriptors incontinência urinária, pós-parto e fisioterapia, and their correspondents in English urinary incontinence, postpartum and physical therapy, combined with the logical AND operator. After applying the eligibility criteria, four (4) articles were selected, which pointed out that the pelvic floor muscle training (TMAP) is effective for improving the strength and function of the local musculature and, therefore, proved to be na assertive treatment for UI. It has concluded that physiotherapy is effective for the treatment of stress urinary incontinence in women in the postpartum period, and are recommended to carry out further studies with greater methodological accuracy to prove the real effect of physiotherapy.
